File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
for Windows Tutorial

In this tutorial, you will learn how to install and run WS FTP as your FTP client. Most FTP clients work similarly, they just look different. This tutorial will walk you through the basics.

If you do not want to use WS FTP, then please see this listing of Windows FTP clients or go to download.com for other options.

Step 1

Go to www.download.com and download WS FTP. Make sure you select "In Windows" next to the search bar. This software is not free and must be purchased after the trial period of 30 days.

Step 2

Install WS FTP on your computer and run it.

Step 3

WS FTP should open up the Connection Wizard. If it does not, click on Connect near the top which brings up the Site Manager. Click on "Create Site".

Step 4

In the box labeled Site Name, enter a name that you would like to associate this domain name with then click Next.

Step 5

Enter your User Name (this is given to you by GKG when you sign up for hosting) and Password in the boxes, then click Next.

Step 6

In the Connection Type window, select FTP in the drop down menu and click Next.

Step 7

If you would like to connect now, click the box next to the words "Connect to this site" and press Finish. If not, just click Finish.

Step 8

WS FTP will now connect to the server. The address of the server you are connecting to is in the left window at the top, inside of a tab. To disconnect from the server, click on Disconnect or the X at the top right of the left window.

Step 9

This screen shot shows you how WS FTP divides the screen between Your Computer's files and the Server's files.

Step 10

Click on Connect and you will see the Site Manager subscreen pop up. The Site Manager lets you manage all the sites saved in your client. It lists the sites under the name you gave it in Step 4. Double click a site name to connect to the server, or Edit that site to correct spelling or change a password/user name. Rename will change the name of the site selected. You can always add sites by clicking Create Site or Delete one with the Delete button.
